Is there tailgating before Dallas Cowboys preaseason games and are they crowded?
Q. Going to a preseason Dallas Cowboys/Oakland Raiders game this year in Dallas while I am down there visiting family. Do people tailgate for preaseason games? Also how crowded are preaseason games? Just trying to plan when I should leave for the stadium and what I can be in store for. Thanks!
Asked by Sean M - Wed Jul 21 16:00:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes there is, but Tailgating is permitted in designated tailgating spaces only around the perimeter of the lots. I enclosed a link to the stadium that should help. While the games are crowded, but it is not that bad getting in and around from my experience. If you want to tailgate, I would show up early (just after the lots open) enough to either get set up or roam around and socialize. You can alos hang out and do the same for a couple hours after the game as well. Have fun, I don't know where your tickets are but take some time and roam the other levels inside as well - amazing place.

How is the amtrax service between Austin and Dallas?
Q. I need to keep travelling between austin and dallas everyweek - usually monday to thursday. Appreciate any feedback on this: How is the Amtrak service between Austin & Dallas ? Is it safe, how are the fellow passengers ? Do you get to buy and eat any snacks/drinks ? How comfortable are the seats for the long journey ? Are there any power points where i can plug my laptop ?
Asked by easyguy2010 - Fri Nov 7 23:06:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have rode the Amtrak train from Dallas to Austin and I really enjoyed it. But it took about 8 hours so it's rather time-consuming. I don't know about riding it almost everyday, though, like you are describing. I think that would get pretty expensive. Yes, I think it's very safe. It wasn't very crowded at all and I enjoyed meeting the other passengers or I could just keep quiet and to myself if I wanted to. You can get up and walk around from car to car and there is a snack car where you can buy snacks and beverages. It is comfortable and the restrooms on board are very clean and decent. I didn't have a laptop at the time, but I bet they do have power points. Not sure about that. All in all, I thought it was a great way to travel. [cont.]

what is there to do on family vacation in Dallas with teenagers?
Q. We are planning a mini vacation the end of July to Dallas. I know about Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor in Arlington. Does anyone recommend Hurricane Harbor or is it a waste of time and money? What other places are fun for teenagers in or around Dallas? My son is 14, and three daughters ages 13 12 and 11. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you.

A. I guess you posted this question twice. Like I said before, the Texas Rangers stadium is near Six Flags. There is Medieval Times, the restaurant in downtown Dallas...There are several malls like Galleria, Vista Ridge, Valley View, Grapevine Mills...The Dallas arboretum (botanical garden) is real nice.

What is the best area of Dallas for nightlife?
Q. My fiance and I are planning to visit the Dallas area later in the month and would like to check out the nightlife. I would love to have your recommendations as far as nightclubs/bars/restauran ts and nearby hotels. (I like to stay in nicer hotels only as I've had a really bad experience.) Thanks for your help!

A. Lower Greenville, Deep Ellum and Addison are good places (although the music is mostly on Greenville and Deep Ellum.) There are ALWAYS great live music performances in the clubs and concert halls. Guidelive and Observer have complete lists of upcoming performances and club activities. Often prepurchase of tickets is required. Hotels can be quite costly in Dallas if you go for upper end. There are lots of nice ones out on the North Dallas Tollway corridor. Also the Loews Wyndham is close to downtown and very nice. The Fairmont has been recently totally updated. You won't necessarily find a good hotel close to night life. If you pick a market weekend you will have trouble getting a hotel period.

Q. I have a degree in global management and comm; my background employment/experience includes customer service, but more recently the focus has been 2yr colleges and 4-yr universities. I am not utilizing my degree in the position I have now but would like to find a job requiring a Bachelor's. A. I feel bad that no one has answered this yet. I wish so bad that I could help you. If no one answers you aside from me you may try putting this question in the Dallas category under Local Businesses. It's easy to get to. Simply click on the 'Local Businesses' category. Then find the United States and click on it. Then select 'Dallas'. People who have the answers you need may check that category regularly and more often than this category. Congratulations on moving to Dallas. I have been all over the country and Dallas is my favorite city. It is so interesting and I love the people. And since I am, so far, no help in this question, I will give you my personal opinion on the best towns to live. You will definitely need to pick a town close… [cont.]

What was the original purpose of the abandoned road in Dallas that is east of Junior Drive?
Q. In the Kessler Park section of Dallas, at the place where Junior Drive makes an abrupt right hand turn and heads south instead of continuing east, there's a concrete road, blocked off by wooden posts. It runs for about a half a block, in an area that, even though it is very near downtown Dallas, is still largely unused, vacant and lonely land. It looks like it was originally an extension of Junior Drive, following Coombs Creek to the east. It's been blocked off like this for at least 42 years. What was its original purpose?

A. Without going out there and looking closely (I live in HEB), just going by the map, I"d say the land is probably unstable due to being so close to the river and thus is probably considered flood land.

Is dallas worth moving to from denver for work?
Q. I am currently going to school in Denver for my bachelors in criminal justice. I recently got recruited to apply to the Dallas police department. I got accepted and am trying to figure out if it is worth it to move out there. The starting pay is basically $41k. Is that enough to live out there comfortably? Is it a nice area to live in?

A. An income of $41,000 in Dallas is the same as an income of $47,000 in Denver. If your wife has an income as well, you can afford to live in a nice neighborhood in a city with good schools. I would not live in Dallas (unless it's North of LBJ Freeway). Working as a policeman in Dallas is a dangerous job if you have to work in one of the higher crime areas, but that's true of any large city. Dallas is NOT the "murder capital of the US". New Orleans and Detroit have recently held that title. As a matter of fact, when you rate a city by "dangerous crimes", Dallas isn't even in the top 25. Richardson, TX is a city just North of the LBJ Freeway and Dallas. The city has low crime and great schools. The University of Texas at Dallas… [cont.]

Q. We are planning to take a trip to Dallas end of July or early August before school starts back. One of the places we want to go is to take my 8 year old to the Dallas World Aquarium. Does anyone know how to get coupons or discounts of any kind as it will cost the 3 of us $50 to get in. That doesn't even include food, etc If it helps it will be 2 adults and my daughter going.

A. We went a couple of months ago and I wasn't able to find any coupons anywhere. My sister-in-law who lives in the area tells me that some locals can get coupons through their employers. I didn't think of it at the time but you might call the aquarium and ask them. Dress for warm weather as part of the exhibit is a rain forest and it's pretty warm. Try to go in the morning on a weekday. I think an 8 year old will love it, though. The manatees were my favorites! But the octopus was pretty cool also. Then there was the HUGE alligator...we didn't think he was real at first, but then we saw him move. ...I could go on and on. Oh yeah, be sure to turn on Griffin Street, not Griffin Boulevard. How much does a substitute teacher get paid in the North Dallas area?
Q. How much can a person get paid with a Bachelors Degree make for substituting in the north Dallas area: Plano, Richardson, Dallas or other nearby cities? No teaching experience, not bilingual.
Asked by Diane - Fri Jan 22 15:01:28 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best thing for you to do is call one of the district offices, or go online. Substitutes get paid the same regardless of their qualifications, so if you're accepted you'll make the same salary as all subs in the area. I would imagine, though, that a big city like Dallas will pay a bit more than the outlying areas. I'm in California and substitute pay is determined by each school district. You might be able to get a map of the school districts in that area by googleing the Texas department of education.

What month do they close outdoor pools in Dallas Hotels?
Q. I am planning a vacation to Dallas. Some of the motels are outdoor pools. Wondering if the pools will be open the entire month of September.
Asked by Rita Bieniek - Sun Aug 29 10:20:57 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most motel/hotel outdoor pools in North Texas (DFW included) remain open throughout September. Even at the end of September, the daytime temperature there is still in the upper 80's and even lower 90's. In fact, September is a better month for enjoying outdoor pools in Dallas than August which is still too hot ( upper 90's to lower 100's...) To be sure though, pick up the phone and call the motels you're planning to stay at and ask.

How long will it take to drive from Dallas to Chicago in December?
Q. My husband and I are planning a road trip from Dallas to Chicago this December. We are planning to leave the day after Christmas and return on the 30th. I know it normally takes about 15 hours, but I wasn't sure if we should expect it to take longer with winter road conditions? Should we get chains for our tires? We are a little nervous about the road conditions and are still debating if we should make the trek. I know Chicago will be cold, but I also heard it is beautiful during the holiday season. Any tips would be great! Thanks!

A. Builders associations may have some experience with that. Change the rules of the association. Your congressperson may have some ammo for you to use considering the tempo of things over the last few years and for those to come. You might e-mail This Old HOuse or Ask This Old House they have info, image, and velvet hammer clout being a respected group. Perhaps one of them might recommend or supply someone to educate your association.

How can my wife find an elementary teaching job in the Dallas area?
Q. We are relocating to the the Dallas area, more specifically McKinney. My wife has applied at over 20 districts in and around Dallas in hopes of getting interviewed for a job. Unfortunately we are now close to July and she has received no phone calls. She has been attempting to visit schools and talk to principles but has not received a lot of attention from the schools. Is she doing something wrong or are we doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My wife is a terrific person as well as caring teacher and has great recommendations from her previous school.

A. Whether or not your wife hears from the districts she has applied with is going to depend on a couple of factors. The first being what her certification is in, and whether or not it is from Texas. If she does not have a TEXAS teaching certification, you will need to have her check with the State Board of Education to see what needs to be done to have her licensed here. This could be as simple as taking the ExCet test or could require more effort. She probably will be able to get an emergency certification if she is in an area that teachers are desperately needed in. This will get her one year to fulfill the requirements of SBEC (State Board of Educator Certification). Call or check with them if this is the case. The second thing that… [cont.]
