Chicago ( /ʃɨˈkɑːɡoʊ/ (help·info) or /ʃɨˈkɔːɡoʊ/) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Illinois, and with more than 2.8 million people, the 3rd largest city in the United States. Located on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is the third-most densely populated major city in the U.S., and anchor to the world's 26th largest metropolitan area with over 9.5 million people across three states. After a series of wars with the local Native Americans, Chicago was founded in 1833, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. The city became a major transportation and telecommunications hub in North America. Today, the city retains its status as a major hub, both for industry and infrastructure, with its O'Hare International Airport as the second busiest airport in the world. In modern times, the city has taken on an additional dimension as a center for business and finance, and is listed as one of the world's top ten Global Financial Centers. Chicago is a stronghold of the Democratic Party, and has been home to influential politicians, including the current President of the United States, Barack Obama. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Chicago as an alpha world city. In 2007, the city attracted 32.8 million domestic visitors and about 1.15 million foreign visitors. Making use of its abundant resources, Chicago has a heritage for hosting major international, national, regional, and local events that include commerce, culture, entertainment, politics, and sports. Globally recognized, Chicago has numerous nicknames, which reflect the impressions and opinions about historical and contemporary Chicago. The best known include: "Chi-town"; "Chi-city"; the "Windy City" with reference to Chicago politicians and residents boasting about their city; "Second City," due to the city generally being the second most prestigious in the nation in terms of culture, entertainment, and finance; and because for much of the twentieth century Chicago's population was the second largest of any city in the United States, and the "City of Big Shoulders", referring to its numerous skyscrapers (whose steel frame designs were largely pioneered in Chicago), described as being husky and brawling. Chicago has also been called "the most American of big cities". From Wikipedia under the

Answered by Ryan W - Fri Jul 7 17:40:24 2006 Are Chicago residents discriminated against when applying to a university inside of Chicago? Q. I recently read that when a person lives inside of Chicago, he or she has a reduced chance of being accepted to a university that exists inside of Chicago. In other words, a person who has been a resident of Chicago, has fewer chances than a person who lives in the greater Chicagoland area. And the further out from Chicago a person goes in the state of Illinois, the more chances a person has of attending a university in Chicago. Does anyone know if these statements are true? I think they might be, because universities can only hold so many students; and the Chicagoland area has a huge amount of possible future students. Asked by Genecks - Fri Jul 24 01:07:34 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Public, possibly. Private, no. Any big city runs like this (I know all too well being a Miami resident trying to get into UM) but the key is to find the place best suitable for your wallet. State universities are your best bet (hit up FASFA the moment you get accepted) and go easy on the student loans. The economy sucks right now and there's no point watching the interest rates of your loans skyrocket if you don't get a job. Best of luck, dude. Answered by cuddleworthy - Fri Jul 24 01:12:49 2009 Why do the Chicago Cubs play most of their games during the daytime at Wrigley Field?
Q. When I watch a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago I notice that most of the games are played during the daytime instead of nighttime. Although Wrigley Field was the last stadium to get stadium lights, the Cubs play most of their games during the day. Is there a reason why most of the baseball games at Wrigley Field are played during the day time? Asked by Mr. Knowledgeable VI - Fri Mar 28 00:00:51 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. You know Wrigley didn't play night games until 1988. There was a major hold-out from Wrigley (the gum people), who wanted to maintain the original characteristic of baseball, being played in natural sunlight. "The boys of summer" are best viewed in sunlight...I agree. Also, Wrigley Field is in a residential neighborhood, and they didn't want the night games to disturb the peace there. Once ownership changed, there was a major push to install lights, but the city of Chicago had banned night games. After MLB threatened to take away all post season home games and the owners threatened to move the team, the lights were turned on. The city finally acquiesced to the demand and allowed limited night games. The did finally relent and add lights… [cont.] Answered by Berg - Fri Mar 28 01:00:27 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "chicago" Chicago or officially named the City of Chicago is an American city.
