tips and techniques for auctioneering?
Q. All I need are some tips on HOW TO be a good auctioneer at a charity work event for a fundraiser. Five things to keep in mind as you volunteer as an auctioneer - for fun!

A. It depends on what style of auctioneering you are going to do. If you are going to call bids, you need some practice with terminal numbers, linked with a few phrases ie. will you bid? will you give? how many dollars? and just develop a method of your own. For example: Alright now the next item is ??? How many dollars for it, set it in, let's go boys, will you give five, yes I got five, now who'll give ten, ten ten, and now fifteen, will you bid fifteen? thank you and now twenty, twenty dollars for it, are you all in ? all through, I have sold it for fifteen dollars. you develop a chant and rhythm is important. Q. My fiance and I would like to open an auction house in a building we own in Ohio. We would like to run every aspect of the business but hire an auctioneer to do the actual selling on auction nights. Neither one of us wants to actually become an auctioneer. Does anyone else do this or does the auction house owner have to have a auctioneer's license?

Auctioneers: How do they do it? I went to a land auction for the first time and I was fascinated by the?
Q. auctioneer. He sounded just like those old time tobacco auctioneers that used to be on the Lucky Strike commercials. He talked really really fast. What impressed me most is that he auctioneered for over five hours without a break and at the end he sounded exactly like he did when he started. He wasn't hoarse of raspy or any less loud and rapid-fire than when he started. Does he have stainless steel vocal cords or is there a technique (or drug) that enables him to do that? BTW I wasn't sure what category to put this question in; it doesn't really fit any of the normal categories.

A. Here a link to the National Auctioneers Association. They certify auctioneers and schools that train auctioneers. In WV you go to a school and then apprentice for a period of time before getting your license. Good luck!

Is it worth it to hire an auctioneer?
Q. I have a couple thousand $ of vintage japanese kimonos/obis, as well as several antiques and collectibles. I can't have a garage sale (I live in an apartment), and ebay is so flooded with kimonos...they sell for a fraction of what they are worth. Is it worth it to deal with an auction house? What have your experiences been? Thank you.

A. If you want to get "what they are worth" then you need to get your items appraised by someone with a background in the type of items you have. Until you do that it's only your opinion as to what they are worth and that may not align with the current market value, which may differ by region of the country/world. Using an auction company that is familiar with the type of items you have will definitely improve your chances of getting what their market value is. The auction company should target an audience that is more likely to buy the types of things you want to sell better than a random buyer coming onto your garage sale. I have not sold anything through an auction house, but have been to auctions that were good and bad experiences for… [cont.]

What percentage does an Auctioneer usually get?
Q. How much of a percentage do they normally charge for selling an estate and all of its belongings? I'm really just curious of the general business, as well.
Asked by Christopher D - Thu Oct 9 23:01:30 2008 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not sure what the auctioneer themselves gets (they could be on salary), however auction houses/companies generally charge 5-15% of the final price. Generally it decreases as a percentage the bigger the sale price.

If an auctioneer does a charity auction at no cost are his services tax deductible?
Q. The auction is benefiting a tax exempt organization so if he does it for free could he deduct his normal cost from his taxes? If he would normally charge for this service though, I would think it would be tax deductible as long as the amount he writes off is being turned into the organization?
Asked by bennytwo5 - Mon Jan 19 20:33:20 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No. The value of your time is not deductible. Although it initially seems unfair, there is a very good reason. When you perform services professionally, you get paid and are taxed on that income. When you perform the same services for the charity, you cannot deduct anything, but neither are you being taxed on any income. In essence, it is the same as if they had paid you the income and you turned around and wrote them a check equal to the amount that you were paid. In that case you would have needed to report the earnings on your tax return and then could deduct the chartiable contribution on schedule A. In that instance you would, at best, get a tax deduction equal to your earnings and end up in the same position as if you had… [cont.]

It's located in the Wood Dale area of Illinois near O'hare, on a dead end street, near expressways. Homes in the area are being torn down or added on to making much of the area larger newer homes.
